- Joseph Campbell

Mythology and storytelling

"When you see the earth from the moon, you don't see any divisions there of nations or states. This might be the symbol for the new mythology to come.
That is the country that we are going to be celebrating. And those are the people that we are one with."
- Joseph Campbell, the power of myth

Premierement, ils t'ingorent
ensuite ils te ridiculisent,
ensuite, ils se bettent contre toi,
ensuite, tu gagne.
- Gandhi

it is difficult to talk about this in a precise manner because there are no stiff rules when it comes to storytelling.

(think: 2001 a space oddessy...awsome yet breaks all the rules...)

its all about surprising the reader
leaviong the good stuff for last.

here are are few pointers that work for me. that dosen't mean they are alwyas applicable, but here goes.

to me, a stroy is like a trap and the reader il a prey who want's to fall into the trap

if he notices the trap he'll be disaopointed.
if the trap is too outlandish, hell be disaponted too.

Sometimes it is better to let the readers know that there is a bomb in the restoraunt,

sometimes it is better no to let them know
it depends on which element creates the greater ammount of tension.

tension is apreciated in story telling

i pesonaly enjoy stories that are carried by the characters (esb)
not just a setting to which the character reacts (star wars)

don't preach.

if you ve got something tomsay, let it come thriough the characters actions.

personal facvorites include:

speed
the usual suspects
shogun
tmnt original comic series
scud the disposable assassin
empire strikes back
blame!
crouching tiger hidden dragon
minority report
dark city

    mythology

mythology for me is a
story that allows us to escape from the horrors of present reality.
and through this escape-story we are given tools to better cope with the hooror of daily life.
thus, reconnecting with the world as a mysterious, breathtaking place.

If it doesn't give you anything to enable you to with your life then its is just fantasy escapism and has no mythological value.
To me star wars a new hope, empire strikes back, and the matrix
are exaples of mythologiacl works

star wars: the concept of the force.
the idea that human kind has something that makes it more powerfull than the machines it created

odly enough the same theme can be found in the first matrix movie
neo getting in touch with his true self and breaking free from the technological prison

these are important themes for our day and age
we feel enslaved by our technoogy and cilvilisation
and these movies give us a way of coping with the thechnologial monstruosity that surrounds us

Another example would be 300 but it is too propaganda like.
Anyone who has read a us marine training manual can see who this movie was prepared for.and i can't help but sees similaritie with the 11 laws of satanism in the way people behave in this movie. it makes me sad.im not saying this is a ''satanic movie''. the charaters just behave according to the laws of that belief system. that's all.

It might have mythological value for a Marine,or a satanist? but for the rest of us who are trying to release our full potential and rise above our. barbaric-animal side, the movie is just interesting visually and maybe story wise for some. if you like depressing stories about human madness.

when incorporating mythology into your work, try to link it with something that you've learned through living. Speak from personal experience as much as you can. don't just copy paste a mythological concept into your work. take that extra effort. it'll be worth it. your work will be much more original

great souces for myhtological insight:

meditaion (outside the organised religion frame)
crisis situations in your life or in someone elses. how they overcame the crisis or how they failed.
dreams
asking question before falling asleep
and getting an answer in your dreams
tarot cards
yi-ching
bardo todol
carlos castaneda
books by joseph cambell
carl jung
hp lovecraft

of course you can read up on lots of mythology too.
but you might end up borrowing ideas that are not original
or have been overly used.

i like to read mythology. it makes me fall into a almost trance like state. i fall very deep into myself. and then i get these exciting flashes.visual images which i then try to bring to the surface of myself...
oh forget it... too hard to explain....
